Eating a Variety of Foods Makes You Healthier

Written by Lovelyn on April 1, 2009 – 11:07 am -

The other day I talked about dealing with picky eaters. Some kids just want to eat the same foods over and over again. Some adults have that problem too. Sometimes you just get stuck in a food rut.

I’ve known people who eat the same foods everyday. They have the same breakfast everyday (honestly, I have the same breakfast everyday too) followed by the same lunch and in the evening the same dinner. It may be easy to eat the same things all the time, but even if what you’re eating is the healthiest food you can think of eating the same thing everyday limits your nutritional intake.

How many different foods have you eaten so far this week? Variety in your diet takes planning, but the nutritional benefits are well worth it.

Here’s a video by a nutritionist. She discusses the differences between the Japanese and American diets. One of the key differences she points out is the amount of different foods the Japanese eat.

I liked this video and your absolutely right: we don’t eat a big enough variety. We think that steak, potatoes, and corn means that it’s different from chicken, potatoes, and green beans. Yuck!

Thanks for sharing, I know that eating a bigger variety of fresh vegetables works for me. :)

I would like to know how to apply this information. Do i make myself a salad with a lot of different vegetables? It sounds hard if you don’t know how to do it. I know I don’t. Can someone help?

You can make salads with lots of different vegetables. You can also include different leafy green vegetables in a green smoothie. Here are some instructions on how to make one.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the task. You don’t have to change all at once. Slowly incorporate different foods into your diet.
