Enjoying the Process
Written by Lovelyn on March 20, 2009 – 2:35 pm -I tend to talk a lot about goals on this blog and how to achieve them. I do so because so often I see people give up on their goals because they feel so frustrated. I experience this frustration to from time to time too. I’ve written about he important of doing something to accomplish your goal everyday before, but I wanted to enjoying the process of getting to your goal today.
Let’s say you saw a documentary about Bruce Lee recently and you decided you really wanted to be like him. That’s a good goal, because he was the best at what he did. It’s good to try to aspire to be the best too. You have to recognize that it took a long time for him to get to that point and it’ll take you a long time too.
Now you’re all pumped up, and you decide to go to the gym and do some extra hard Bruce-Lee-style training. That’s good. You have enthusiasm, but you have to remember that whether it’s your first training session or your hundredth training session you’re not going to be as good as Bruce Lee yet. Should that make you feel discouraged? No.
Yes, you have an ultimate goal that you should keep in mind, but as you’re going through the process of trying to reach that goal you shouldn’t continue to compare yourself to what you see as the end result. It’ll take a lifetime to be a good as Bruce Lee. Many people have tried. How many people have gotten there?
Don’t keep comparing yourself to the goal because what happens is you get all depressed because you haven’t gotten there yet. Then you spend so much time thinking about that that you don’t spend enough time thinking about what you need to do to get there. You have to be able to equate your progress honestly. Compare yourself at training 100 to the way you were at your very first training. When you see improvement in yourself you enjoy the process and feel better about continuing it.
