What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Besides being a massage therapist, I’m also a CranioSacral therapist. I started training in CranioSacral Therapy right after I graduated from massage school.

Before entering massage school, I’d never heard of this form of bodywork. One of the teachers at my school was a CranioSacral therapist. One day she did some work on one of my classmates who had a severe headache during a break between classes. I’d gone into the room to watch. What I saw in that room really impressed me. That’s when I decided that I wanted to study CranioSacral therapy.

CranioSacral therapy is a gentle form of bodywork. It is so gentle that it can be performed on newborn babies. The therapist using a touch that is no greater than the weight of a coin to manipulate the craniosacral system and the fascia that might be obstructing the system.

The brain and spinal chord are bathed in a liquid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid is held in place by a fibrous membrane called the dura mater and is pumped around the brain and spine in what is referred to as a semi-closed hydraulic system. This semi-closed hydraulic system is the craniosacral system.

By placing their hands on various parts of you body a CranioSacral therapist is able to feel the rhythm of your craniosacral system. The therapist can then determine where blockages in your system may be located and work to release these blockages.

There is some controversy about CranioSacral therapy. There is no scientific proof that their is a distinguishable craniosacral rhythm. Once of the concepts in the therapy is the manipulation of cranial bones. Some believe that these bones cannot be manipulated.

I know that these aspects of the therapy make it seem a bit wacky, even to me, but I can’t deny that I’ve seen results. I’ve had CranioSacral therapy done to me numerous times and I’ve noticed a difference after sessions in my clarity of thought, ability to sleep through the night and even a back pain relief. In working on others, I’ve experienced much success in treating chronic headaches, including migraines, and fibromyalgia. CranioSacral therapy can also be used to treat following conditions:

  • stress
  • neck pain
  • TMJ
  • autism

If you’re having trouble with one of these conditions you might want to give CranioSacral therapy a try. You can locate a therapist in your area here.
