A Letter to Yourself
Written by Lovelyn on March 2, 2009 – 12:06 pm -On my twenty-first birthday I wrote a letter to myself. It wasn’t my idea, but the idea of a friend. We typed out letters to ourselves on her computer. We sealed the letters in envelops with pictures of ourselves from that same day. On the envelops we wrote the date ten years later that we were to open them on. Then we exchanged the letters so that we could mail them to each other on that date.
We didn’t keep in touch, but I kept her letter with all my important documents. Every now and then when I was looking for something else I’d see it and wonder how she was doing. Ten years passed and the time to mail her letter to her came. She’d written the address of her parents farm on the envelop so I took that chance that they still lived there and sent the letter to them. About a month later, I received my letter in the mail from her along with a little note.
Reading the letter was funny. It was interesting to see how much I’d changed in that space of time. I’d done some of the things I wanted to do before I’d turned thirty-one. Other things I’d forgotten about completely. It was good to get the letter from my younger self. It was good to be reminded of who I once was and how much I’ve changed and also how much I’ve stayed the same. It reminded me of who I wanted to be.
My challenge to you is to write a letter to yourselves. You don’t have to wait ten years to open it. You can wait one or two. If you know someone who will mail the letter to you that’s great. If you don’t, just keep it tucked away in a drawer. You could you the website FutureMe.org to send yourself an email in the future.
Here are some things you might want to include in your letter to yourself.
1) What is happening in your life right now that you might want your future self to remember, or laugh about?
2) How do you hope you will be different from the person you are today? How do you imagine you will have changed?
3) What advice would you give to your future self?
