Mercury Found in High Fructose Corn Syrup

I wrote about the health hazards of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in a previous post. Recently, another problem was found in the product. A new study published in Environmental Health showed that their was mercury contamination in 9 of 20 samples of HFCS they tested.

In the process used to make HFCS, mercury is used to make a caustic soda that breaks down the corn kernels. There are other ways to make that product without the use of mercury, but some manufacturers haven’t yet converted to alternative methods.

Why should you care?

Mercury is a neurotoxin. It especially affects the brain development of children. Limit the number of products you consume which contain HFCS–yogurt, sodas, candy, cereal bars, barbeque sauce, instant oatmeal. The list of food products containing this goes on and on. It’s most processed foods.

Here’s the article about it in the Washington Post.
