Help Achieving Long-Term Goals

Written by Lovelyn on October 8, 2008 – 4:08 pm -

Usually when I set a long-term goal, I try to break it down into a series of short-term goals. Accomplishing these short-term goals will eventually cause me to accomplish the long-term one. Some goals are difficult to break down though, and I find myself having to simply aim for the ultimate long-term finish with no short-term goals to mark my progress.

When this happens, it’s harder to keep my end goal in focus. When you’re trying to achieve something and the outcome is still far away it’s easy to become distracted and confused. You’re moving toward a goal, but you get frustrated because you haven’t gotten there yet. I see this happen in my own life and in the lives of those around me.

When you’re trying to accomplish something, and the end point is just out of site. Freaking out and worrying may be natural for some, but you have to resist that, because freaking out isn’t going to help you get to your destination. The only thing that will help you achieve the goal is doing the necessary actions to accomplish it. If you stop because you can’t see the end result, you’ll never see the end result because you stopped.

Staying motivated and continuing toward the goal is the only way to accomplish it. But how can you stay motivated when you start to feel defeated.

Write a Journal

Journaling your progress is a good way to keep track of what you’ve accomplished so far and what you want to accomplish. When you’re lacking motivation you can go back and read past entries.

Ask For Help

You might not be able to accomplish your goal on your on. It’s important to notice when you need help. Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends for help. You might just need someone to give you a pep talk.

Take a Break

Sometimes you just need to take a break. Relax and give yourself time to re-group. When I’m tired I do terrible work. A refreshed mind is a better problem solver than an exhausted mind.

Believe in Yourself

Remember that you can do it. You are able to accomplish more than you know. I’m always amazed at the capability of human beings. If you believe that you can do it, you’re already half way there.

I love the idea of breaking larger goals into small ones. There are things I am have been trying to accomplish for months (some years) now and once I recently starting doing this, I am getting so much more done. Its too easy to get lost in the “big picture”.
