10 Simple Ways to Increase the Amount of Exercise You Get Everyday

Most of us want to get more exercise, but we never think we have the time to do it. Doing a few simple things differently can help you get more exercise and be more physically fit. Doing a lot of little things can add up to a healthier you.


  1. Park farther away. Instead of spending time driving around and around the parking lot looking for the perfect parking space, park at the back of the lot. Besides getting some extra exercise, you will get less dings in your car doors because no one else will be parked there.
  2. Take the stairs. Skip the elevator and take the stairs. It gives you leg strength and helps increase cardiovascular health.
  3. Use your exercise equipment. You know that stationary bike you bought when you thought you’d start exercising. Pull it out of the garage, put it in the living room and ride it during your favorite TV show.
  4. Exercise during commercials. If you don’t have any unused exercise equipment try doing sit-ups or push-ups or whatever other kind of ups you can think of during commercial breaks.
  5. Apartment running. I used to run around my apartment to get exercise. It worked.
  6. Stand when your on the phone. Standing burns more calories than sitting. Try standing up every time you talk on the phone. If you don’t like standing it might make you spend less time on the phone.
  7. Ride your bike. Ride your bike to work or to the store.
  8. Walk. For closer errands walk.
  9. Housework. Cleaning your house burns calories. Anything that requires movement does. Housework burns 144 calories per hour. Gardening burns 350 calories per hour.
  10. Play. If you have children play with them. They’ll burn up a lot of calories. Get down on the floor and play. If you don’t have kids maybe you could borrow some. Try babysitting for a friend.
