When Things Don’t Go As Planned Look For New Opportunities

No matter how well we plan and how sure we are things will go a certain way, there are always elements of situations that are beyond our control. My family is moving to London. We were supposed to leave today, but because of bad weather in New York and delays we’re still in Florida and spending the night at my parents’ house. We had a nice day at the airport though. We’re thinking of it as a test run.

When he found out that we’d be coming back here, my stepson was quite distressed. “But we were supposed to leave today,” she said. “Can’t we just spend the night in the airport? I can’t go back. We’re supposed to be gone already.” He has a difficult time deviating from the plan. When plans change he becomes irritable and difficult to deal with.

My stepson isn’t alone in his response to changes in plans. I know many other people who have similar reactions. Even I do the same thing sometimes.

There are many occasions when things will not go as planned. During those times it’s important to keep your cool, evaluate the situation and consider the alternatives. There are probably plenty of alternatives. With every change of plan there is a new set of opportunities to explore. So think of it as an opportunity. Then the change of plan is easier to deal with.
