Walking: Your First Step to Health
Written by Lovelyn on February 4, 2008 – 10:25 pm -We all know that exercise is good for us, but getting around to doing it tends to be a problem. I’m as guilty as the next person. Intimidated by the exercise machines at the gym, I lift weights at home and exercise along with the latest exercise guru’s DVD. I have to admit that for the most part my exercise routine has been sporadic at best.
There is one thing that I do consistently. I walk every day for thirty minutes. Walking is great exercise. It helps reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease. It builds bone density, lowers blood pressure and increases your mental health. Walking is a great way to clear your head and improve your health. I like to think of walking in three parts.
- Walk slowly for the first five minutes to warm up.
- Walk briskly for twenty minutes. Get your heart pumping.
- Walk slowly for another five minutes to cool down.
Try to walk at least three times a week for thirty minutes. Don’t forget to do some stretching before and after your walk to keep your muscles loose. The time you spend exercising now will save you time in the doctor’s office and the cost of medical bills in the future.
